The Town of Amherstburg says it'll invest in new amenities and increased educational opportunities at its Open Air Weekends thanks to support from My Main Street.
The new amenities include more lighting, seating, and reusable signs to make downtown Amherstburg more welcoming.
The town will also invest in more opportunities for public participation in free live performances and workshops that are both entertaining and educational.
"We are incredibly grateful for the support from My Main Street, the Canadian Urban Institute, and the Government of Canada," said Mayor Michael Prue. "The Open Air Weekends and Amherstburg Uncommon Festival helped us to enhance community engagement and to make our downtown more vibrant, which will be seen now and for years to come."
Amherstburg hosted Open Air Weekends between May 31 and September 1. The Uncommon Festival was the weekend of September 20.
"Main streets are at the social and economic heart of community life in cities and towns across southern Ontario," said Canadian Urban Institute CEO and President Mary W. Rowe. "The enhancements the Town of Amherstburg implemented downtown will not only attract visitors and increase foot traffic but will contribute to our collective infrastructure, strengthening our downtown cores as vibrant and inclusive places for everyone."
To date, the My Main Street program has helped nearly 4,500 businesses and organizations create almost 7,500 jobs and leveraged $19-million in investments.
