City files lawsuit against federal government

The City of Windsor is suing the federal government for the reimbursement of fees incurred during the blockade of the Ambassador Bridge in 2022.

While the federal government agreed to pay $6.9 million to cover the city's costs incurred during the event there is still $900,491 outstanding.

"The Government of Canada's refusal to cover our costs and acknowledge their clear legal responsibilities for securing the Ambassador Bridge border crossing places an unjust and unfair financial strain on Windsor property tax payers," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

The lawsuit also asks for a formal declaration of federal responsibility for policing and securing the federal border crossing and compensation for ongoing expense related to protection Windsor's international border crossings.

"We have asked, we have written letters, we have brought it up saying when can we get this issue going and get some traction and sit down with folks...crickets, complete silence," said Dilkens. "We've added that to this particular lawsuit to draw attention to the fact that there are ongoing expenses."

It's estimated city tax payers pay $200,000 to $300,000 a year in relation to protecting the border.
