Windsor police have taken more reports about personal crime in October than they did for the same month in 2023.
The crime stats for Windsor and Amherstburg were released on Monday and showed an increase in crimes against people, both year-to-year and trending in 2024 to date.
The trend, though, was in the opposite direction for crimes against property.
In comparison to October 2023, personal crime went up by 5.6 per cent, with police taking 264 reports last month. Murder, sexual assault, assault, robbery, and harassment fall into this category.
In 2024 to date, a total of 2.743 personal crimes were reported, a 15.9 per cent jump over the same period last year.
Property crime, which includes break-and-enter, fraud, mischief, and possession of stolen property, went down 6.6 per cent in October compared to 2023, with 1,089 reports taken.
For year-to-date, crimes against property were down 0.1 per cent, with 10,015 incidents between January and October 2024.
For Criminal Code violations not falling under property or personal, Windsor police said there was a 5.2 per cent increase for October, compared to last year. For 2024 to date, the increase was 3.3 per cent.
Child pornography, non-violent weapons offences, betting and gaming offences, and administration of justice violations are included in the latter category.
Police also did a ward-by-ward breakdown of crime for May, for Windsor only. Ward 3, which includes the downtown core, had the highest rate of property crime, with Ward 2 in the west end a close second. For personal crime, Ward 3 was also tops.
Ward 1 had the lowest number of property crimes, while Ward 10 had the lowest number of personal crime reports.
