Holiday Lights contest gets underway in Essex

Residents and business owners in the Town of Essex are competing to determine who has the best holiday light display.

The Essex Holiday Lights Contest is underway, and residents are invited to choose the winners.

"The Town of Essex is buzzing with excitement at this time of year," said Mayor Sherry Bondy. "We encourage residents and visitors to take part in the many local events and support our local business owners during the holiday season."

Each year, participants are invited to create the best display possible, take a photo and submit it online. Submissions will be accepted between November 25 and December 28.

The submissions will be added to an interactive map posted on the town's website that people can use to find the best displays.

This year, winners will be chosen in five categories. The Toyland Award will go to the submission with the best use of animation or inflatables, while the Griswold Award recognizes the best use of lighting. For those who prefer a traditional Christmas, there's the Classic Christmas Award for those with the best traditional decor. The Jingle Bell Business recognizes the business with the best commercial decor.

The fifth category is the People's Choice Award. Visitors to the Essex Facebook page can choose their favourite submission overall. Voting for that award is between December 29 and January 4.
