Phone scam warning issued by Windsor police

Windsor police have issued a warning after receiving complaints about scammers posing as officers.

Some residents have received calls from people claiming to be from Windsor police, according to a post on social media.

"Scammers are using caller ID spoofing to pretend their call is coming from Windsor Police," read the post on X. "Scammers tell victims that they face some sort of penalty and that an arrest warrant will be issued in their name unless they transfer large sums of money."

Windsor police will never randomly call residents and ask for payments or personal information.

To protect yourself, police suggest that you keep your cool, and not be intimidated by fear tactics or harassment. Never give out any personal or financial information.

Next, hang up the phone and call the Windsor police's non-emergency line, (519) 258-6111, to verify if the call is from police.

If you believe someone has attempted to rip you off, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
