Housing a priority for former Grace hospital site

The City of Windsor is looking ahead to developing the former Grace Hospital site.

Commissioner of Economic Development Jelena Payne indicated it could be the next property they seek expressions of interest in the Housing Solutions Made for Windsor strategy.

"Residential is the number one priority but then we're also looking at an opportunity to integrate mixed-use with commercial also so that it's a livable community, a walkable community, and very holistic," said Payne.

This will not be the first time an expression of interest for development has been issued for the former Grace Hospital site. An EOI was issued in 2019 and the city had an agreement with Fairmount Properties to develop mixed-use student housing. The agreement was ended in 2023 when little progress was made.

An EOI for the Caron Street parking lot and Pelissier Street parking lot have already been issued.

"We want to see these locations maximized, as much as possible, with as much density as possible," said Payne.

"These properties lend themselves very well to intensification."

Payne said there could be news about the Caron Street property forthcoming.

Applications for the Pelissier Street EOI are being accepted until January 28, 2025.
