You may see some vessels on the water this week, as cold temperatures have resulted in ice.
The U.S. Coast Guard kicked off Operation Coal Shovel on Monday.
Working with the Canadian Coast Guard, ice cutters will go up and down the water from southern Lake Huron to western Lake Erie. They will clear ice on the St. Clair River, Lake St. Clair, and the Detroit River.
"During this operation, U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard icebreakers work together as ice conditions worsen throughout the winter to ensure the ability to conduct search and rescue, flood mitigation, and facilitate navigation to meet the reasonable demands of commerce," read a release from the U.S. Coast Guard.
The icebreaking operation also allows for vessels to break ice on waterways leading to icebound communities, to allow food, heating oil, and supplies to get through, and improve access to health care.
The Coast Guard may restrict or close access to waterways as ice conditions dictate.
"Ice on the Great Lakes can be unpredictable and pose unique risks," read the release. "The U.S. Coast Guard recommends all recreational ice users plan their activities carefully. Check weather and ice conditions before going out, carry a reliable means of communication, wear proper clothing to prevent hypothermia, and stay away from shipping channels."
