Windsor to back playoff-bound Lions with drone show Friday

The City of Windsor is again getting into the act as the Detroit Lions head on another quest for a Super Bowl.

Friday will be a day of celebration as Windsor-Essex puts on the Honolulu blue-and-silver, culminating with a free drone show on Windsor's riverfront.

The Lions will not play again until next weekend, but Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino said the City is already catching playoff fever.

"Thank you, Detroit Lions, what a great opportunity to celebrate the Lions as Canada’s Favourite NFL Team, and visit downtown Windsor," said Agostino. "Pack up the kids, book a dinner reservation, or enjoy a cocktail and have a toast to the Lions. This will be a spectacle you just can’t miss."

The show begins Friday at 7 p.m. at Riverfront Festival Plaza and will run for about 15 minutes.

The Detroit Lions, the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association (DWBIA), and Tourism Windsor-Essex Pelee Island (TWEPI) are making the drone show possible.

"What better way to promote our Two-Nation Destination of Windsor and Detroit and showcase the Detroit Lions in a prominent way on the iconic Windsor waterfront," said TWEPI CEO Gordon Orr. "Red and white are Canada’s colours, but all playoff season long we know Windsor residents will be proudly displaying their Honolulu blue, and we look forward to thousands heading to downtown Windsor to show their love for Windsor’s unofficial football team."

A day of activities is planned for Friday, beginning at Charles Clark Square with the raising of the Detroit Lions flag at 10:30 a.m. and an appearance by the Lions' "We Want More Tour" bus.

The tour bus will be on public display outside Caesars Windsor's grand entrance from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

The DWBIA will also offer free coffee and hot chocolate on the streets of downtown.

The Lions made history this season with a 15-2 record, the most wins in franchise history. With a win over Minnesota on Sunday night, they clinched their second straight NFC North title and earned their first-ever number-one seed for the playoffs, which means all of Detroit's potential playoff games, except the Super Bowl, will be played at Ford Field.
