Residents of the Town of Amherstburg who have potassium iodide (KI) pills expiring this year may replace them at two public events.
The Town is working with the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit to hold the events at the Libro Credit Union Centre on Wednesday and Saturday.
The purpose is to ensure that those living in the primary zone, or those closest to the Fermi II nuclear power plant in Michigan, have a fresh supply of the pills. The pills distributed back in 2017 are due to expire in March.
"KI pills block the thyroid from absorbing radioactive iodine which may be released during a nuclear incident," read the notice from the health unit. "KI pills would help to prevent the development of thyroid cancer in such instances."
Despite the Fermi II plant being in the U.S., the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) mandates that all residents within the plant's primary zone have KI pills readily available.
The primary zone is within a 16.1-kilometre radius of the plant. It includes southwestern Amherstburg, the downtown core, and Boblo Island.
Pill distribution will take place at the Libro Centre from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and then from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Complete information about KI pills can be found on the health unit's official website.
