Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has issued an alert after someone entered an Essex resident's home during an alleged fraud attempt.
Police took a complaint from a Harrow resident on January 10. Investigators learned that the resident got a call from someone claiming to be from the Ontario Rebate Office, wanting to set up an appointment to conduct an energy audit at their home to see if they qualify for a rebate.
"The caller states they will attend the resident's home where they will check the interior and then ask to view their utility bills," said OPP Constable Steven Duguay. "After viewing the utility bills, the unknown person informs the resident that they would qualify for a monthly rebate and that they would apply for the rebate on their behalf. The individual gives the homeowner a confirmation number when they call so you can be sure the person at the door is 'legitimate' to give the homeowner a false sense of security."
Police have cautioned residents against letting strangers into your home, and against making impulsive business decisions. Do your research first.
The OPP said that you are not required to let anybody into your home to verify your eligibility for a rebate. Never share personal or utility information with anybody you don't know. If you feel pressured or rushed, simply hang up the phone.
Anyone who has experienced a similar incident, or with information, should call the OPP at 1-888-310-1122. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
