Another EV battery supply chain manufacturer settles in Windsor

Another company in the electric vehicle supply chain is setting up shop in Windsor.

NEO Battery Materials Ltd. is investing $69 million to build a 87,000 square foot facility on surplus land at the Windsor International Airport.

"We are constructing a facility for silicon anode materials and silicon anodes is a drop-in solution into lithium-ion batteries that can increase the battery capacity but we will also be pursuing other types of value-added projects as well," said Danny Huh, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Operations.

The company's mission is to help accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles.

"With our implementation of silicon anodes within electric vehicles we can drastically reduce the price of batteries and in turn the automotive OEMs will be able to produce electric vehicles that are priced lower and priced competitively with the gasoline-powered vehicles," said Huh.

Production will begin later this year with full scale production scheduled in the next five years. The facility is expected to create 100 jobs in the region.

"NEO Battery Materials’ decision to invest in our city highlights our ability to attract forward-thinking companies that drive innovation and create opportunities for our community. As the Automotive and Automobility Capital of Canada, and one of the most important communities to watch in the province and country, we are excited to welcome NEO to Windsor and look forward to the positive impacts, including job creation, this investment will bring to our region," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

Windsor City Council approved in principle a Community Improvement Plan grant for the facility.
