City receives funding for Wyandotte Street extension and Banwell Road

More road improvements are imminent in the Banwell Road corridor thanks to additional funding from the provincial government.

The City of Windsor received $18.8 million to widen Banwell Road, extend Wyandotte Street East and improve the Banwell Road/McNorton Street intersection.

"I’m proud to see the Ontario government supporting critical infrastructure improvements on Banwell Road and Wyandotte Street East,” said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie. “These upgrades will not only facilitate the construction of up to 3,030 new homes, but they will also enhance the overall transportation network, improving mobility and connectivity for residents in our growing community."

The $18.8 million funding comes from the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program.

"It is not possible for us to do this work in the context of our capital budget alone. We need support so we applied for this program and I'm delighted today to be able to stand here and say we are the recipients of this," said Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens.

The City of Windsor will contribute $24 million to complete these projects. The funds have already been allocated as part of the 2025 capital budget.

"As soon as the weather breaks we'll be able to move forward and start making some of the improvements that will help the new homes to be built but also help address some of the capacity and road challenges that we see on Banwell," said Dilkens.
