As crews demolish 14 homes in the Indian Road area, west-end residents look forward to a resolution and resurgence for the neighbourhood.
The City of Windsor and the Canadian Transit Company, the Canadian arm of the company that owns the Ambassador Bridge, have been at odds over the homes for years.
Ward 2 Councillor Fabio Costante said residents want a resolution.
"The demolition of the homes, and some stability in the area and a better idea of what the future long term is going to look like, is certainly something that we all want to see," said Costante. "This is the real last big piece, but it's the last piece to a complete revitalization of Sandwich."
According to the CTC website, the company plans to improve facilities for the Canadian border services.
"CTC will be engaging with the Community regarding the Canadian border services facilities work. CTC is setting up a Project information Center and will be convening a Community Advisory Committee," the website states.
Negotiations with the City of Windsor continue, but Costante couldn't speak to specifics.
"The discussions in the last, I would say two years, especially the last year, have been very constructive, very positive. There's been open dialogue, and there's a willingness to tackle some of the issues and challenges," said Costante.
Costante confirmed the City of Windsor's building department has recently issued 14 demolition permits, and five others are under consideration.
