Fraser Institute study says Windsor's property crime rate tops Detroit's

Is crime higher in Canada than in the U.S.?

According to a new study by the Fraser Institute, it depends on what kind of crime you're talking about.

The institute looked at violent and property crime between 2019 and 2022 in 36 Canadian census metropolitan areas and 317 American metropolitan statistical areas.

The highest rates of violent crime are still in U.S. cities, but many were ranked as safe or even safer than their Canadian counterparts.

"Ontarians are no doubt aware that the rate of property crimes in the province's biggest cities is on the rise," said the study's author, Livio Di Matteo. "They might know how bad it's become relative to American cities."

In Ontario, Thunder Bay had the highest rate of violent crime, with 546.1 incidents per 100,000 residents and property crime, with 3,309 incidents reported.

Windsor placed 230th on the list for violent crime with 236.5 incidents for every 100,000 residents and 80th on the list for property crime with 2,760.8.

It was seventh in the Great Lakes area for property crime, while London was second behind Thunder Bay.

The Fraser Institute says adjusting for population, Windsor and London have a higher property crime rate than Toronto, New York and Detroit. Detroit's rate

"Crime rates in some of Ontario's largest cities, while still historically low, are on the rise and should be of greater concern," added Di Matteo.

Across Canada, the city with the highest rate of violent crime was Winnipeg, Manitoba, with 675.1 incidents for every 100,000 residents, and Lethbridge, Alberta, had the highest property crime rate, with 5,521.4.

Lethbridge was also at the top of the combined Canadian-American list for property crimes.

The city with the most violent crimes in the U.S. was Memphis, Tennessee, with 1,294 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, while the top American community for property crime was Pueblo, Colorado.
