U.S. border agents stopped a shipment of suspected cocaine from being carried into Canada on Friday.
Members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations made the discovery in a commercial vehicle at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit. The truck was due to head into Canada.
The vehicle was selected for examination and a physical search. Officers uncovered three garbage bags hidden behind stacks of lumber.
Tests confirmed that 52.96 kilograms of cocaine, in 50 bricks, were in the bags.
The drugs were confiscated, and the commercial driver, a Canadian citizen, was arrested.
"This is a testament to the quality of work performed by those who work tirelessly to combat transnational crime and stem the flow of dangerous drugs through our communities," said CBP Director of Field Operations Marty C. Raybon. "Border security is a team effort, and I applaud the outstanding work by our officers and our regional law enforcement partners."
The investigation continues.
