The counting of thousands of ballots in a key federal riding begins Tuesday.
The judicial recount of votes in the Windsor-Tecumseh-Lakeshore seat will begin at the riding's Elections Canada branch, at Green Valley Plaza in Tecumseh.
Ontario Superior Court Justice Ross MacFarlane ordered the recount on Friday, May 9, at the request of the campaign of Liberal candidate Irek Kusmierczyk, who narrowly lost his seat to Conservative candidate Kathy Borrelli.
Election night totals placed Borrelli ahead by 233 votes, and a validation by Elections Canada lowered the lead to 77 votes, just seven votes more than needed to trigger an automatic recount.
The counting of all ballots is expected to take three days.
Kusmierczyk campaign lawyer Jeff Hewitt argued that the issue was with hundreds of rejected ballots, and that he saw no reason for those ballots to be thrown out.
A series of affidavits included examples of rejected ballots, which Hewitt argued should have indicated voter intent.
Eli Mogli, a lawyer representing the Borrelli campaign and the Conservative Party of Canada, argued that the recount should be staffed sensibly and fairly.
All parties hope to complete the recount by Friday. King Charles III is due to formally open the next session of Parliament next week.
