Town of LaSalle to hold byelection

The Town of LaSalle will hold a byelection to fill the vacant councillor position.

The seat is vacant after long-time councillor Sue Desjarlais passed away in April.

It took several votes by LaSalle councillors to reach the decision.

The byelection will be held on October 20 and is expected to cost the municipality over $100,000.

"I know $100,000 is a lot to everyone, but I also know how important it is that people get a fair say in democracy," said Mayor Crystal Meloche. "I also know that if there was something else going on in the town that we thought was really important that we would make sure that we found a spot for that in the budget."

Multiple councillors thought that, given the cost, staff time, and the length of time left in the term, an appointment would be appropriate.

"I can't put an understanding of spending close to $100,000 in a byelection for a year," said Councillor Anita Riccio-Spagnuolo. "Next year, we are going to an election again, and for me, at this time, I just don't feel like that is the right route."

Council is expected to officially declare a byelection on July 8. The nomination deadline will be September 5, 2025.
