Environment Canada says wildfire smoke to affect region

As wildfires continue to burn in northern Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan, Environment Canada says smoke is expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility locally.

The national weather agency issued a special air quality statement for Sarnia-Lambton, Chatham-Kent, Windsor-Essex, western Middlesex County, and western Elgin County on Friday afternoon.

Wildfire smoke is expected to affect the area late Friday evening into the overnight before moving out of the area before morning.

Environment Canada said as smoke levels increase, health risks increase.

We're being encouraged to limit time outdoors, and consider reducing or rescheduling outdoor sports, activities and events.

The smoke can cause mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, or a mild cough.

More serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains, or severe cough. If you think you are having a medical emergency, seek immediate medical assistance.

Those most at risk include people aged 65 and older, pregnant people, infants and young children, people with an existing illness or chronic health condition, and those who work outdoors.

Residents are being told to keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

You can protect your indoor air from wildfire smoke by using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner that can filter fine particles.

If you have to spend time outdoors, wear a well-constructed, well-fitting and properly worn respirator type mask.
