Windsor police probe pair of jewelry thefts in 'distraction' scam

Windsor police have asked the public to be vigilant after it took at least two complaints about jewelry being stolen from unsuspecting passersby.

Two recent incidents involved a male and female suspect. Investigators with the Pawn Unit say the pair approached the victims in a store parking lot, engaged them in conversation, and offered a "gift" piece of jewelry.

Police then say the victims would be distracted to the point where the suspects would steal a piece of the victim's real jewelry.

"We are reminding everyone to be vigilant when approached by strangers offering unsolicited items or engaging in unusual conversations," police tweeted. "If you are approached in a similar manner, please refuse the gift and immediately report the incident to Windsor Police."

Anyone with information should call the Windsor police's Pawn Unit at (519) 255-6700, ext. 7431. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
