The government of Ontario is joining forces with three other provinces to help grow the country's economy.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford met with Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, and Prince Edward Island (PEI) Premier Rob Lantz on Sunday to officially sign separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs).
Alberta and PEI are also pledging to work together.
"With [U.S.] President Trump taking direct aim at Canada’s economy, we need to do everything we can to protect Ontario and Canadian workers by super-charging our own internal trade opportunities," said Ford.
According to the Ontario government, the value of interprovincial trade in 2021 between Saskatchewan was around $15 billion. It was roughly $62 billion with Alberta and $1.5 billion with PEI. Estimates for 2022, 2023, and 2024 weren't available.
"Now is the time to take strong action to strengthen trade across Canada," said Moe. "Our province remains committed to removing restrictive barriers that limit the flow of trade."
This announcement comes a couple of weeks after the Ontario government signed a similar MOU with Manitoba's government.
The Ontario government also states it'll continue to work with its federal, provincial, and territorial partners through the Canadian Free Trade Agreement and other trade-enhancing initiatives to advance interprovincial trade.
