The stories of interaction between human and animal are the theme of a new exhibit at Art Windsor Essex (AWE).
The temporary exhibit "Ndishnikaaz | Nugwa’am | My name is,” opened at the downtown gallery on Thursday. It is a collaborative exhibit featuring the work of Canadian sculptor Mary Ann Barkhouse.
"There are stories in this exhibition about what we keep and what we should return," said AWE Head of Exhibitions and Collection Emily McKibbon. "Stories that offer paths towards more ethical ways of being. But Barkhouse asks that before hearing these stories, we begin by naming ourselves to their storyteller: Ndishnikaaz | Nugwa’am | My name is."
According to the gallery, the work uses items from the AWE collection, and, "places them in conversation with Barkhouse’s artworks."
Through their interaction, the viewer may explore the past as well as what lies ahead, according to the gallery.
"Ndishnikaaz | Nugwa’am | My name is" will be displayed on the third floor of AWE, until March 29, 2026.
Admission to the gallery is $10 or free for AWE members. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
