Record may have been set at Carrousel of the Nations

Did attendance at this year's Carrousel of the Nations break a record?

The executive director of the Multicultural Council believes it did.

Following a successful first weekend, attendance at participating villages doubled in the second weekend.

"We had 50,000 the first weekend, approximately," said Fred Francis. "And the second weekend, we had approximately 100,000. All in all, over the six days, we're estimating about 150,000 people."

Typically, attendance climbs from the first to the second weekend.

"Without having people there with clickers counting heads, we are taking estimates from each village. We're seeing how much food and how much drink was sold, and we're combining all of that to get a good estimation," said Francis. "Anytime we surpass the 100,000 mark, any time we're around 150,000 or even close to 200,000 -- that's record territory."

Francis said the Trinidad and Tobago village ran out of food this weekend, and crowds packed the Albanian pavilion.

Francis was pleased to see a high turnout at the Ukrainian village after its long hiatus from the festivities.

Funds raised from the event support newcomer programs at the Multicultural Council and the villages throughout the year.
