Seniors' programming supported through provincial grant

Three local organizations that support seniors are expanding thanks to grants from the provincial government.

The $55,000 for the local organizations is coming from the Seniors Community Grants.

"Having supportive programs that ensure seniors have a healthy and active life is vital for our community to prosper and to grow and to attract even more great people," said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie.

The Town of Tecumseh received $15,000 to expand its Thrive Together Program. The program will enhance senior wellness in the town by offering fitness programs, social events and workshops for seniors.

"With these dollars here we can bring in the right people at the right time to teach our seniors a whole host of new opportunities for them," said Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara.

Family Services Windsor Essex received $15,200 to train staff in elder abuse awareness.

"This grant is going to support us in training our CRE, certified tax volunteers in recognizing elder abuse signs, and being able to build pathways in interventions already existing in our organization," said Ciara Holmes, Acting Executive Director of Family-Services Windsor-Essex.

Finally, the VON received $24,891 for its mobility program.

“At VON, we provide care that helps our senior clients stay healthy, live well and remain active and socially engaged in their homes and communities, where they want to be. We are grateful for this Seniors Community Grant funding, as it will enable us to increase our fall prevention work in the community by training volunteers to empower older adults to improve their mobility and prevent falls through exercise,” said Nicole Hunter, Manager, Home and Community Care for the Erie St. Clair – Southwest Region.

The funding will support the programs for one year.
