The Town of LaSalle has officially begun the process of filling a vacant council seat.
The Town officially gave notice on Wednesday morning that a byelection has been called for Monday, October 20. Town councillors approved the bylaw at their meeting on Tuesday night.
Candidates may now begin to apply to run for the seat vacated by the death of Councillor Sue Desjarlais.
Nominations are now open, but applications for candidates or third-party advertisers must be filed in person at LaSalle Civic Centre. Appointments, though not required, are preferred and may be scheduled by calling (519) 969-7770, ext. 1263, during regular business hours.
The deadline to file for candidacy is 2 p.m. on Friday, September 5.
Eligible electors should expect to receive a Voter Information Letter (VIL) at the end of September.
Voting will take place by internet, with advance voting beginning on October 10, and running until the voting period ends on October 20, 2025, at 8 pm.
The Ontario Municipal Elections Act requires that on election day, voters live in LaSalle, are the owner or tenant of land in LaSalle, or are the spouse of such owner or tenant. Voters must also be Canadian citizens, at least 18 or older, and otherwise not prohibited from voting by law.
The successful candidate will take the oath of office at the council meeting on Monday, October 28, and serve out the remainder of the current term, which ends on November 14.
Desjarlais passed away in April.
Complete information about the byelection is available at the Town's official website.
