VIA Rail travel disrupted by derailment near Brantford

Those who travelled Friday on VIA Rail had some difficulty getting to their destinations.

VIA Rail confirmed on Friday afternoon that there were disruptions along the Windsor-Toronto corridor due to a derailment.

"We can confirm that rail traffic near Brantford has been completely halted due to a freight derailment," said VIA Rail in a statement. "This incident, which is beyond our control, is causing significant service disruptions."

The issue was on a rail line operated by Canadian National (CN), which is used by VIA Rail trains.

Trains from Windsor to Toronto Union Station were cancellled for the remainder of Friday.

Trains from Toronto to Windsor continued to operate with a detour through Guelph.

"VIA Rail is closely monitoring the situation, and cancellations or schedule changes may be announced during the day. Passengers affected will be informed directly," read the statement.

Specific information about VIA Rail departures and arrivals may be found on the official VIA Rail website.
