The two girls who died in a personal watercraft crash on Lake St. Clair last week have been identified.
The family of Ava Sussums, 16, from Calgary, named her as the second girl who passed away on Wednesday, and identified her cousin Hailey Scatterty, 17, as the girl who was pronounced dead last week.
Sussums was taken to a trauma centre last week with life-threatening injuries.
Her family posted on social media on Thursday expressing their sorrow and saying Ava will be their forever angel.
“Ava always wanted to help people and was so beautiful, funny, kind, and had the biggest heart in the world,” her mother, Leesha, wrote. “She always wanted to do something when she grew up to help kids, so we thought that it would be an amazing legacy for her to be an organ donor.”
She added between 75 and 90 children and women will be helped through Ava's organ and tissue donation.
“We take comfort in knowing our sweet girl is going to help so many, and live on through so many others,” Leesha said. “It has been a blessing and a privilege being her parents and her big brother. We know we have tough days ahead, but we have each other to lean on and get through this, and Ava has already been giving us signs that she is here with us and all around us.”
The other two girls involved in the collision, 15 and 17 years old, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They have not been named, and there's no update on their condition.
The crash happened last Thursday when a personal watercraft towing an inner tube hit a break wall.
