Personal crime in Windsor and Amherstburg still falling in August

Windsor police have reported encouraging numbers when it comes to crimes against people.

Crime statistics for August were released by the service on Wednesday, covering residents in Windsor and Amherstburg. They showed that personal crimes in both communities combined fell by double digits compared to August 2024, by 14.3 per cent.

This trend had been ongoing throughout the summer, with year-to-year declines reported in June and July. Windsor police characterize personal crime as including murder, sexual assault, abduction, assault, robbery, and harassment.

Officers recorded 258 personal crime complaints in August.

Year-to-date, those reports are down 4.3 per cent, based on 2,047 reports taken in 2025.

However, property crime continued to go in the wrong direction, rising by 6.9 per cent for August, comparable to the year before. Officers in Windsor and Amherstburg took 1,096 reports of crimes against people.

Property crimes include arson, break-and-enter, fraud, mischief, and theft.

For the year to date, property crime is down 6.5 per cent against the period between January and August 2024. There were 7,279 reports taken thus far.

The number of Criminal Code violations took a massive drop in August, by 26.6 per cent. Offences falling into this category include child pornography, non-violent weapons offences, betting and gaming offences, and administration of justice violations.

The massive August decline helped slow the increase in Criminal Code violations for 2025 to date, now up by 1.5 per cent.

Looking at crime by ward in Windsor only, Ward 1 reported the lowest personal crime rates in the city. Ward 7, which covers much of the east end, had the lowest rate of property crime.

Ward 3, which includes downtown, continues to have the highest number of reports in both categories.

A complete summary of the August crime stats can be found on the Windsor police's official website.
