Windsor's unemployment rate topped the country last month as it rose to 11.1 per cent, up nine-tenths of a percentage point.
Statistics Canada's Labour Force Survey showed the loss of 1,000 jobs in the city in August. While the labour participation rate rose to 62.9 per cent, up from 62.5 in July.
The August survey noted regions in Southwestern Ontario have suffered economic uncertainty brought on by tariffs, especially on vehicles and vehicle parts.
Workforce WindsorEssex also released data on Friday showing that while active job listings are up from July, they still lag behind last year. There were 3,288 active postings on its website in August, including 2,167 new ones. The job board received 27,263 post clicks, an increase of three per cent from July.
Across Canada, employment slipped for the second month in a row, as the national economy shed 66,000 net positions. The employment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 60.5, while the unemployment rate climbed just as much to 7.1 per cent.
Most of the decline in employment was in part-time work and impacted the professional, scientific, and tech services sector, transportation and warehousing, and manufacturing the hardest. Manufacturing lost 19,000 positions across Canada in August, but there were 17,000 new jobs in construction.
Ontario lost 26,000 positions, but the unemployment rate fell 0.2 percentage points to 7.7 per cent.
There was little change in the total number of hours worked by Canadians from July, and average hourly wages climbed another 3.2 per cent, or by $1.12 to $36.31.
