Suicide Awareness Walk set for Sunday

Hundreds of people are expected this Sunday at the tenth annual Suicide Awareness Walk at the St. Clair College Sportsplex and in Essex County.

The Canadian Mental Health Association - Windsor Essex County Branch calls it a powerful day of remembrance, support, and action to address the stigma often associated with mental illness and suicide.

"Suicide Awareness Month is about more than remembering those we've lost. It's about coming together as a community to take action," said Nicole Sbrocca, the CEO of CMHA - WECB. "Every life matters, and every conversation, training, and show of support has the power to save lives. By reducing stigma, encouraging open dialogue, and ensuring people know where to turn for help, we can create a community where no one has to struggle in silence."

Every year, about 4,500 Canadians die by suicide, more than 12 people every day. Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for those under 25, and men die by suicide three times more often than women.

Registration and a health fair open at 8:30 a.m., followed by opening remarks at 9:30 a.m., and a 2K and 5K walk.

Those who want to participate can also register online.

This year, special guest Chad Kennedy will participate. Kennedy founded Sea to Sea for PTSD and has walked across Canada to raise awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and mental health. The Canadian Armed Forces veteran, first responder, and mental health advocate will finish the final leg of his 2025 journey.

Other speakers on Sunday morning are the President of St. Clair College, Michael Silvaggio, and Ward 3 Councillor Renaldo Agostino.

Community walks are also planned in Belle River at the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre's Earth Walk Trail starting at 10:30 a.m.

In Leamington, the walk will start at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and end at Seacliff Park. It starts at 8:30 a.m.

As part of Suicide Month Awareness, Caesars Windsor will be illuminated purple on World Suicide Prevention Day, September 10.
