Community wraps its arms around family hurt in fiery crash

Already, the local community is wrapping its arms around a family of five that suffered devastating injuries in a crash in Windsor on Saturday night.

Police were called to Tecumseh Road East at McDougall Street just after 8:30 p.m., and found a pickup truck and an SUV on fire.

Firefighters extricated both drivers from their vehicles.

Police learned that the pickup truck was traveling westbound on Tecumseh Road East when it struck a car, veered into oncoming traffic, and collided with the SUV.

A co-worker of the family's mother set up a GoFundMe campaign soon after word got out that the family was involved.

"Shane is hanging on, but [is in] very critical [condition] in the ICU," wrote Christine Docherty. "He had multiple injuries and was in surgery for five to six hours."

Christine continued to write that he suffered head, chest, abdominal injuries, and a fractured femur. Others in the family suffered pelvic and back fractures that will require surgery.

As of Monday morning, the campaign had raised 80 per cent of its $20,000 goal.

"Stephanie is one of the sweetest, kind-loving souls I've ever had the pleasure of working with, and would do anything for anyone," continued Docherty. "If you can please find it in your hearts to donate and help this family out in any way you can, it would be greatly appreciated."
