Unifor holds rally to support Titan workers

Unifor members rallied with locked-out employees from Titan Tool and Die on Wednesday to send a message to employers of all sectors.

With chants of "protect Canadian jobs", the union wants employers to know that they will not stand by while jobs are shipped across the border.

"Shame on Titan Tool and Die for abandoning the very workers who have built this company. Unifor will make sure the entire auto industry community is aware that Titan is not a company who lives up to the commitments it made to its workers," said Unifor National President Lana Payne. "There must be consequences for any company who thinks they can move our jobs to the United States. This fight is in no way over. We are just getting started."

The 27 workers at Titan Tool and Die have been locked out since August 11. The union claims all of the equipment has been moved out of the plant on Howard Avenue.

Unit Chairperson Randy St. Pierre said they will hold out for a good contract.

"We've given them our money because back in 2008, we gave them $4 million of our pension so that they could continue to run this company, and what did they do with this $4 million? This is the result," said St. Pierre.

St. Pierre said the employees were blown away to see the support from the community on Wednesday.

"Seeing all the support really lifts our spirits. We know we're in this fight for the right reason. We're in it to protect Canadian jobs, and we're in it to make sure this doesn't happen to any other business in this city," said St. Pierre.
