Windsor police's Retail Theft Unit is looking back on a productive first year of work.
The unit, which focuses on shoplifting, organized retail crime, and repeat offenders, was launched in September 2024. Since then, it has reported a 31 per cent decline in shoplifting reports.
Police reported that the unit has closed the book on 570 shoplifting incidents, including four tied to organized theft groups. Just over half of those arrested were repeat offenders.
Windsor Police Inspector of Patrol Support Jennifer Crosby said that the purpose of the unit was to help businesses keep down costs that may otherwise be passed along to consumers.
"Retail theft has a significant impact on businesses, employees, and the community as a whole," said Crosby. "The work of this unit is ensuring that repeat offenders are identified and held accountable, while also addressing organized groups that exploit our retailers. These results reflect the dedication of our members and the importance of strong partnerships with local businesses."
Members of the unit work closely with Windsor retailers to help enhance loss prevention strategies.
