Survey of homelessness survey is coming up, Windsor needs volunteers

The City of Windsor is seeking volunteers to assist with a survey of individuals experiencing homelessness in the region.

The Point-in-Time Count will take place on October 15 and October 16 this year at different locations across Windsor and Essex County.

The national initiative measures homelessness and housing insecurity in communities across Canada, and volunteers play a vital role in conducting surveys.

Volunteers won't work alone. They'll be part of a team led by an experienced professional in the homelessness sector. Volunteers will receive mandatory training before the event covering survey procedures, health and safety protocols, and trauma-informed engagement practices.

The data collected from the survey will help municipal and community leaders form informed local policy, services, and supports for those experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers must be 18 or older, be comfortable communicating with the public, have strong interpersonal and communication skills, and be capable of walking up to four kilometres during a shift. Previous outreach or social services experience is an asset, and all volunteers must complete a vulnerable sector check.

Those interested in volunteering should visit the City of Windsor webpage.
