Not only did the Municipality of Lakeshore welcome the newest class of firefighters during a graduation ceremony, it also honoured some who have served the community for decades.
Three new awards were presented Thursday night at the Atlas Tube Recreation Centre.
District Chief Joe Derikx received the Legacy Leadership Award, recognizing the firefighter who exemplifies leadership, mentorship, and commitment to becoming the best they can be.
Mike Sisic won the Heart of the Community Award, which honours the firefighter who exemplifies empathy, inclusivity, and unwavering dedication in supporting community members facing hardship.
Chantelle Bacon was the first recipient of the Orange Shield Trailblazer Award. It's given to a new recruit or probationary firefighter who shows perseverance, dedication, and learning beyond the basics.
Long Service Awards went to Chris Brigley, Keith Carter, and Bill Fuerth for 25 years of service. Reid McMurren, Rob Armstrong, Mark Robitaille, Jeff Gervais, and Christine Lassaline were recognized for 30 years of service, and Steve Little for 35 years. Wayne Morris was recognized for 40 years of service.
Fourteen new firefighters graduated during the ceremony.
"We know we can count on each other. We are a united front, we combine our skills, and we work together as one, with unwavering trust and dedication to one another," said new recruit and graduate Cassandra Aarssen. "I hope all of us remember how lucky we are to be members of the Lakeshore Fire Family. Being a firefighter isn't just a job. It is an honour, a responsibility, and a calling."
