As of Monday morning, two new red light cameras will be tracking speeders and those who run red lights.
The new cameras have been installed at Lauzon Parkway and Tecumseh Road East, and at Lauzon Parkway at Lauzon Line.
That brings the total number of operational cameras in the city to 16. The City of Windsor still has four more to install.
These cameras are not the same as automated speed enforcement cameras. Windsor plans on rolling out ASEs, as they're called, in December with a priority of five school areas. Those will be installed on Cabana Road East between Howard Avenue and Holburn Street, on Clover Avenue between McHugh Street and Tecumseh Road East, on Huron Church Road between Millen to just north of Tecumseh Road North, on Forest Glade Drive between Lauzon Road and Wildwood Drive, and Conservation Drive between E.C. Row Avenue and Calvert Court.
The ASEs are in designated school zones or community zones. Speeding fines in those areas are doubled under the Ontario Highway Traffic Act.
"Red-light cameras and automated speed enforcement cameras are proven tools for improving intersection safety and road safety in key areas of the city," said Commission of Infrastructure Services and City Engineer David Simpson. "By deterring dangerous driving behaviours, they help reduce collisions, lower the severity of collision injuries, and save lives."
The cameras are part of the city's Vision Zero aspiration to improve road safety for all road users.
