Restoration of fence around Willistead Park to start

Work starts Monday to restore and repair the perimeter fence around Willistead Park.

Fifty fence pillars, including the gates along Chilver Road and Richmond Street, will be reconstructed using the original material. The pillars are getting older and have been damaged by the freeze-thaw cycle over the years.

Sterling Ridge General Contracting is the general contractor for the project, which will cost $500,000.

The work will continue throughout the fall before pausing for the winter. The project is expected to finish in the spring.

Access to the park on Chilver Road and Richmond Street may be closed at times, but the contractor will endeavor to limit any pathway closures.

The original wrought iron fence was built in 1914 and cost the Walker family $60,000. It was designed by Stahl Kinsey and Chapman Architects. Page Wire Fence in Walkerville supplied the wrought iron.
