Have you received your new blue recycling bin for recyclables from Circular Materials?
The City of Windsor is moving to a single-stream recycling collection system, where paper, plastic, and aluminum will be collected in a single container.
Circular Materials, which is taking over recycling pickup from the city, said residents can continue to use their existing blue boxes until the end of the year, but starting January 1, those won't be picked up.
Circular Materials CEO Allen Langdon said the old blue boxes are incompatible with collection trucks. Collection is automatic, and the new containers have a barcode on the front that ensures compatibility.
"For the majority of residents, this recycling cart should meet their needs within the new single-stream recycling collection system in Essex-Windsor," responded Langdon via email to inquiries from WindsorNewsToday.ca. "If residents are consistently exceeding the capacity of their new recycling cart after they start using it in January, they can submit a request at that time by contacting the local collection contractor, GFL Environmental. GFL will work through a needs assessment process with the resident. If a secondary cart is deemed necessary, it will be provided to the resident at no cost."
Some Windsor residents have, and wonder what to do with their old blue boxes.
Commenters responding to a post on Change.org expressed frustration with the change.
"I currently have two Herby Curby bins that will just end up in a landfill if I can't use them," wrote Sandra. Her last name wasn't provided. "I thought the idea is NOT to fill up the landfill. This makes no sense!"
Circular Materials recommends repurposing them.
