City to launch pilot diaper collection service

The City of Windsor is launching a diaper collection pilot project as the municipality moves to bi-weekly garbage collection.

As part of the program, collections will be made to registered users on the off-week of regular garbage collection.

Senior Manager of Environmental Services Jim Leether said they researched many options after hearing concerns from parents, seniors and assisted living facilities throughout the municipality.

"What we did learn from our research was that typically when we make the switch to bi-weekly garbage collection we see quite the influx of people using the program but then as behaviours change and people learn how to use the bi-weekly garbage collection system they get better at storing and they make use of that," said Leether.

Residents can register for the collection through 311. They will stay registered until the end of the pilot project. However, if registrants miss more than two scheduled pickups they will be removed from the program.

Extra collections will start the first week of January. In the meantime, if diapers are piling up between collections they can be dropped off at the depot on North Service Road free of charge.

"The big change there will be is that you will not go to the public drop-off depot, you'll actual come to the City of Windsor's Environmental offices. So were people come on to that property and turn right and go to the depot you'll now turn left to come to our office and we'll take your material for you," said Leether.

The year-long pilot project will cost around $228,058.
