Ontario Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Sarkaria visited Windsor Friday to check out the work underway at Banwell Road and E.C. Row Expressway.
The $110 million project is supported by $68.8 million of provincial funding.
"When you look at the NextStar EV battery plant and what it means for our community, to be able to move their traffic, we have to be able to move our people throughout the region in order to be successful," said Mayor Drew Dilkens. "The city certainly has a role to play. We're in this for a considerable sum as well, but we couldn't have done this without the support of the Province of Ontario."
Work on the Banwell Road overpass and interchange at E.C. Row Expressway is expected to be substantially complete in 2027, with some surface asphalt work in 2028.
"The entire world is looking at Windsor and the transformation that is happening here. So to be here to support the transformation of a lot of the infrastructure, to be able to support these large investments, that's why we're proud to stand here with Mayor Dilkens and MPP Andrew Dowie to recognize the progress of that work," said Sarkaria.
Another Banwell Road corridor improvement that will be undertaken as part of the project is the widening of Banwell Road from a two-lane rural road to a six-lane urban cross-section starting near Mulberry Drive and continuing over the E.C. Row.
There will also be a new intersection at the NextStar Energy plant.
