OHL team warns of online scam

The Windsor Spitfires are warning the public of fraudulent emails trying to collect money from local businesses and fans.

On Wednesday, the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) team posted a scam alert on its social media accounts.

In the post, the club advised that e-mails had been sent out impersonating Windsor Spitfires business operations staff, attempting to collect payment in exchange for vendor space, merchandise tables, or promotional opportunities. The emails go on to ask for advance payments through unofficial channels.

The team explained that the Spitfires would never enter vendor agreements or request payments without in-person communication. An official invoice would also be issued by the team's business operations department alongside any payment request.

The team added that legitimate emails would come from addresses ending in @windsorspitfires.com.

Anyone who believes they may have received a suspicious e-mail is asked to contact the Windsor Spitfires directly.
