EQAO results show math continues to be a struggle for local students

The Ontario government is reviewing standardized testing after the release of the latest Education Quality and Accountability Office test results.

At the Greater Essex County District School Board, all scores either improved or stayed the same in the 2024/2025 school year compared to the previous year.

Grade 3 writing scores took a dip at the Windsor Essex Catholic District School Board. Only 71 per cent met or exceeded provincial standards last year compared to 77 per cent in 2023/24. All other scores improved or stayed the same.

Math continues to be a struggle across all school boards. At both the public board and Catholic board only 57 per cent of Grade 9 students met or exceeded the provincial standard. Province wide, 58 per cent of students met or exceeded the provincial standard.

“The latest EQAO results show that more action is needed to support our students and help them succeed,” said Minister of Education Paul Calandra. “In too many cases, dysfunction and infighting among trustees have distracted boards from this core responsibility. I have taken the time to closely review these results, and we are taking decisive action to get students on track for stronger achievement.”

At the WECDSB, 94 per cent of Grade 10 students taking the literacy passed on their first try, while 84 per cent of Grade 10 students at the GECDSB passed it on their first try.

Two people will be appointed as part of the province's advisory body to review what students are learning, how they are prepared for standardized tests, and if teachers have proper tools in the classroom.

Findings and recommendations will be presented to the Ministry of Education following the review.

Results for all boards and specific schools can be found on the EQAO website.
