Three hurt in SUV, ambulance collision in Amherstburg

Paramedics were among those injured after an ambulance was hit by an SUV on Tuesday afternoon.

Officer from the Windsor police Amherstburg detachment responded to the crash at around 2:30 p.m., on Alma Street and 5th Concession Road North. An SUV and an ambulance were discovered in a ditch, with the SUV overturned. Both vehicles suffered serious damage.

The preliminary investigation showed that the SUV was travelling sorthbound on the 5th Concession North, and was speeding, when it blew through the stop sign at Alma Street and struck the ambulance, which was travelling westbound.

Two paramedics and the SUV driver were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. A third paramedic was injured later while removing equipment from the damaged rig.

The 50-year-old SUV driver was cited for careless driving.

The intersection of Alma Street and the 5th Concession North was closed for about four-and-a-half-hours while the investigation was completed and the debris was cleaned up. It has since reopened.
