A new year brings new regulations designed to protect Ontarians from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
The Amherstburg Fire Department is doing its part to remind residents and business owners about the new requirements for CO alarms, which took effect provincewide on January 1.
"CO alarms are essential for protecting people from the dangers of CO poisoning, a potentially deadly and silent threat," according to Amherstburg Fire's official website. "CO is the cause of 15,000 cases of accidental poisoning as well as several hundred deaths each year in North America. It is often referred to as the 'Silent Killer'".
CO alarms are now required on every floor of a home or business, and not just near sleeping areas.
In multi-unit residential buildings, alarms must be installed in all suites that meet certain conditions, service rooms, and public areas.
In long-term care homes and group homes, CO alarms must be installed in suites and common areas.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless gas produced by the incomplete combustion of fuels such as wood, coal, gas, oil, and charcoal. Sources include poorly-maintained chimneys and venting systems, exhaust fumes from running vehicles, and fuel-burning appliances designed for outdoor use being operated in enclosed areas.
Complete information about CO alarms can be found on Amherstburg Fire's official website.
