Saying access to cutting-edge facilities and equipment is key to preparing students for success after graduation, Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie announced $9.65-million for St. Clair College and the University of Windsor.
"This investment in the University of Windsor and St. Clair College will help our students develop critical, job-ready skills, secure good-paying careers, and continue to drive the growth of Windsor-Essex's local workforce," said Dowie.
For the University of Windsor, over $4.8-million will help renovate the biotech lab, update classrooms, and replace the roof. Another $700,376 will go towards enhancing experiential, flexible, and accessible learning in high-demand and high-skill programs.
"The University of Windsor is grateful to the Ontario government for its investments to help modernize classrooms, instructional equipment, and campus facilities," said President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. J.J. McMurtry. "UWindsor is committed to ensuring students are prepared to thrive in an evolving labour market, and investments like these strengthen our ability to provide industry-aligned learning opportunities."
St. Clair College will receive more than $3.6-million to replace the roof, upgrade electrical, and replace the storm and sanitary sump pumps, while $425,500 will buy updated equipment for medical laboratory programs, including a hematology analyzer, automated cell counter, and serofuge machine. The architectural technology program will also get new computers.
"Investing in building upkeep and equipment upgrades is essential to supporting student success, especially as the province-wide college system, including St. Clair College, approaches its 60th anniversary next year," said St. Clair President Michael Silvaggi. "Like any long-standing institution, our facilities require continuous care to meet modern standards."
The investment in Windsor is part of a $242-million bid by the provincial government to update classrooms and equipment at publicly-funded colleges and universities across Ontario.
