Two local athletes will represent Canada on the Para ice hockey team at the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.
Zach Lavin from Essex returns to the team as a forward, and Corbin Watson from Kingsville has been named as one of the team's two goaltenders.
"We are incredibly proud to announce the athletes who will represent Canada in Para hockey at the 2026 Paralympic Winter Games," said Scott Salmond, senior vice-president of high performance and hockey operations . "This roster reflects years of dedication, resilience and commitment to excellence. The group has shown tremendous growth and belief in one another, and we are excited about the opportunity ahead. Our goal is clear—to compete with pride, represent our country with distinction and give ourselves the best possible chance to bring home a gold medal for Canada."
Lavin was part of the team that won silver at the 2022 winter games.
"This roster is the result of a thorough and competitive selection process, and every athlete has earned their place," said Boris Rybalka, head coach. "We have a group that blends experience, skill and hunger, and they understand what it takes to compete at the highest level. Our focus now is on preparation, accountability, and playing with purpose. If we stay true to our identity and trust the process, we believe this team has what it takes to compete for a gold medal in 2026."
Canada's para ice hockey team last won gold in 2006.
The Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games will take place March 6-15, 2026. The team is scheduled to play on March 7, 8, and 9. The semifinals will be played March 13, with the medal games on March 15.
