Province invests in east end sewer improvements

Improvements are coming to the stormwater infrastructure in Windsor's east end thanks to a nearly $20 million grant from the provincial government.

The East Marsh Drainage Redirection project will focus on upgrading the sewer system and reducing the risk of surface flooding in the drainage area of the Pontiac Stormwater Pumping Station.

"We know there will be a day when we will get another heavy weather event, and it's vital that we be protected from that and do what we can to protect people's property," said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie.

The City of Windsor will contribute $7.6 million toward the project.

"This is the type of project that, from a city perspective, would be very difficult to do without some support from higher levels of government. So today getting $20 million, helping to unlock $7.6 million on our side, you've got an almost $30 million project which is quite material and will make a big difference in Riverside and East Riverside," said Dilkens.

The following roadways are included in the East Marsh Drainage Redirection project:

-Florence Avenue from Wyandotte Street East to Riverside Drive East

-Menard Street from Florence Avenue to Elinor Street

-Clover Street from Clairview Avenue to Wyandotte Street East

-Clairview Avenue from Clover Street to Adelaide Avenue

-Elinor Street from Clairview Avenue to Wyandotte Street East

-John M Street from Clairview Avenue to Menard Street

-Clairview Avenue from Clover Street to Florence Avenue

The project will start this year and take around a year and a half to complete.
