Windsor police kept busy as winter weather leads to more crashes

Windsor police have urged drivers to exercise caution when driving in winter weather.

The snowfall this week has resulted in officers responding to a high number of collisions, and more snow is in the forecast for this weekend.

"Our Traffic Enforcement Unit is reminding all drivers to slow down and drive with caution as winter conditions arrive," read a social media post from Windsor police.

This week alone, police handled 176 crashes in Windsor and Amherstburg.

Police say that the best way to avoid a snowy collision is not drive when conditions are bad. But, for those who must drive, police have some tips to keep drivers safe.

  • Slow down and leave extra space between vehicles. Do not crowd snow plows or salt trucks.

  • Clear all snow and ice from windows, lights, and mirrors.

  • Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns.

  • Ensure that your tires are properly inflated and winter-ready.

  • Never drive distracted or impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Drivers are also encouraged to allow plenty of extra time to reach their destinations.
