Province kicks in $7.4-million for sewer project in Leamington

Leamington is receiving more than $7.4-million in funding from the province to help complete a major sewer project in the municipality.

Chatham-Kent-Leamington Trevor Jones announced a total of $7,410411 for the first two phases of the Northwest Quadrant Sewer Separation infrastructure project through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program, Health and Safety Water Stream.

The provincial program supports access to safe drinking water, housing, job creation, and protection for communities in the event of extreme weather events.

"The Northwest Quadrant Sewer Separation Project plays a key role in protecting public health, strengthening our infrastructure, and reducing the risk of flooding during extreme weather," said Leamington Mayor Hilda MacDonald. "This funding allows us to move the project forward, support local jobs, and ensure Leamington has the reliable services needed to support new housing and future growth."

The Township of Pelee also received $707,884 for its Pelee East Shore Distribution System and Water Storage Rehabilitation Project. It will help the township maintain a safe supply of drinking water and expand emergency response capacity.

"Critical funding provided through the Municipal Critical Infrastructure Program is very impactful for our small island community," said Cathy Miller, the mayor of Pelee Island.

The province has increased funding to the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program - Health and Safety Water Stream by $700-million for a total of $875-million.
