Saying that the public health system is changing, the Windsor Essex County Health Unit is releasing a new strategic plan for the next five years.
"We continue to face complex issues and ongoing health inequities," said CEO Ken Blanchette. "Our new strategic plan meets these challenges by using staff expertise, community input, and local data to create a clear path forward for the Health Unit."
The health unit said it developed the plan by listening to residents, community partners, and its staff.
It will focus on key health issues, strengthening public health monitoring and transparency, supporting disease prevention and early intervention, and building a strong, innovative organization.
Another key priority is using data from community groups and the lived experiences of vulnerable populations to improve health equity. The plan said it will use that information to set priorities, allocate resources, and lobby for policy changes and investment from upper levels of government.
By focusing on children, youth, and families, the health unit's plan also calls for investment to address food and housing insecurity.
"This plan shows our shared dedication to improving population health through early action, better system coordination, and addressing the social and economic factors that impact health," said Medical Officer of Health Doctor Mehdi Aloosh. "It's guided by evidence, shaped by local voices, and supported by clear objectives."
The Windsor Essex County Health Unit board of directors meets on Thursday.
