Unemployment grows half a percentage point in Windsor in January

Windsor's labour force shrank last month, along with the participation rate, and the unemployment rate climbed half a percentage point to 8.1 per cent.

The local economy shed 4,600 jobs in January. That, after adding 300 in December.

The city's labour force dropped from 266,900 to 263,400, and the labour participation rate went from 65.5 per cent in December to 64.7 per cent in January.

Across the country, the national economy lost a net 25,000 jobs as the employment rate fell one-tenth of a percentage point to 60.8 per cent.

The national jobless rate was 6.5 per cent.

Manufacturing was hit the hardest by job cuts with the loss of 28,000 net positions, most of them in Ontario, where employment fell 0.8 per cent or 67,000 net positions.

The provincial jobless rate was down six-tenths of a percentage point to 7.3 per cent.

Educational services lost a net of 24,000 positions, and employment in public administration fell by 10,000 jobs.

On the upside, information, culture and recreation added 17,000 jobs, another 14,000 were added in business, building and support services, and agriculture added 11,000 positions.

The private sector lost 52,000 positions in January, but employment in the public sector and for those who are self-employed stayed about the same from December.

Average hourly wages continued to climb in January, up 3.3 per cent or by $1.18 to $37.17.
